Teacher's guide
Welcome to BUILD YOUR ENGLISH VOCABULARY! This website is designed to support Groot Goylant's students build and expand their English vocabulary in a fun way.
1. Why did we build this website?
- We recognize that the students at Groot Goylant have very varied levels of English. This means that the chance that you have students who are far behind their peers when it comes to the basics of the English language, or that you have students who are well ahead of their peers and finish their assignments faster than others, is quite high.
- We know that designing differentiated lessons takes time. This website was designed to help you keep your students busy and engaged during your lessons, no matter their level.
- Building vocabulary helps students improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The more vocabulary someone knows, the more proficient they will be at that language (The Importance of Vocabulary, JCFS, n.d.).
2. Getting Started:
- Ensure that all students have access to their Chromebooks and earphones.
- Introduce BUILD YOUR ENGLISH VOCABULARY! to your students, explaining its purpose as a tool for learning new words and improving vocabulary skills.
- Demonstrate how to navigate the website, explore the different levels, and access interactive learning activities.
- Explain that at the end of each section, there's a quiz they can do to see how much they've remembered. The results of the completed quizzes can be requested by contacting the designers of this website (contact details can be found at the bottom of the homepage).
- Share the link to the website with your students.
2. Vocabulary Building Activities:
- Encourage students to explore different vocabulary categories on BUILD YOUR ENGLISH VOCABULARY!, such as animals, food, colors, and everyday objects.
- The vocabulary topics for each level were determined as per the CEFR guidelines (Learn English Worldwide, 2023).
- You can assign specific vocabulary words or categories for students to focus on each week, based on their learning objectives and language proficiency levels or you can have the student explore the website on their own.
- You can also incorporate the interactive vocabulary games and quizzes available on the website into your lessons to reinforce learning and make vocabulary acquisition fun.
3. Testing knowledge and retention:
- At the end of each level the students, after practicing with the various vocabulary topics, are invited to take a formative assessment to measure their improvement. Your students results can be requested by contacting us. You can find our contact details on the homepage of this website.
We hope that this website helps keep your students engaged and that you see their level of English soar. Please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or suggestions you have that will help us improve BUILD YOUR ENGLISH VOCABULARY!
